Incorporated as a town in 1735, Grafton is rich in history dating back to the 1600s when it was originally occupied by the Nipmuck Indians. Grafton was then known as Hassanamisco (place of small stones). The Town of Grafton was named for Charles Fitzroy, Duke of Grafton.
Grafton is now home to a diverse population of 14,894 residents. Although the town has grown, much of its typical New England landscape remains unchanged. The town is committed to maintaining open space with designated areas of conservation land. Many of the original homes of Grafton still stand throughout the town. These historical homes compliment the landscape and bring us back to the nostalgia of years gone by. Miscoe Brook Preserve hopes to recapture this feeling with its Greek Revival inspired homes set on two existing scenic roads.
History prevails in Grafton as one passes through the Grafton Common, a four acre parcel of land set aside in 1738 as common land for the community. Bordering the Common are many exquisite antique buildings including the old Town Hall, now the site of unique shops, a Tea House and the Historical Society. Other landmarks on the Grafton Common include the public library, charming churches, the Grafton Country Store, and the Grafton Inn, known centuries ago as Hotel Kirby. Possibly the most noteworthy landmark in Grafton is the Willard House and Clock Museum. The Willard House was built in 1716 by Joseph Willard. Four of Joseph's grandsons went on to become famous clockmakers. Their works are displayed on site at the Willard Clock Museum, which is recognized nationally by the National Register of Historic Places.
As Grafton has grown, lovely new neighborhoods have emerged across the town. In response to the growing numbers of children, a beautiful new elementary school was built. The sense of community is rich in Grafton for children and adults alike with many organizations, volunteer groups and churches with which to become involved: Apple Tree Arts, Community Harvest Project, Friends of the Grafton Public Libraries, Grafton D.O.G., Grafton Garden Club, Grafton Historical Society, Grafton Lake Sox (Senior Babe Ruth League), Grafton Land Trust, Grafton Lions Club, Grafton Soccer Club, Polish National Home Association and more. Grafton is ideally located in close proximity to the Massachusetts Turnpike, Interstates 290, 395 and 495, and Routes 9, 20 and 146.
